EXTRA INFORMATION:
Station type of work - It's a CHECKPOINT going out of the valley into the rest of the state...it is a very small town, with some brush work. It's not big by patrol standards. They catch tons of dope there. I mean literally tons. It's probably the best checkpoint station in Texas. No X's
Shopping - Small Wal-Mart and a small HEB grocery store, one dry cleaner, a couple of dollar stores, one video store, one of most of everything you need, There are a few stores on Main Street. For major shopping - go to Kingsville, Alice, Corpus Christi, or McAllen. McAllen and Corpus Christi are about 1 hr. away.
Eateries - Pizza Hut, Whataburger, several decent Mexican places, a sub shop, a BBQ place, a STARS (like Sonic), Subway, McDonalds, and Several "mom & pop" restaurants.
Cellular Telephone - As far as cell phone coverage, AT&T does not have service in this area; you will not be able to get a local number, but you can get service through roaming with fairly good reception.
Local Internet Providers - Multiple, EarthLink does not have a local access number, AOL does, and Power Net Global does
Other Services - Very small town. Several other towns in vicinity. If you live outside city limits you may not be able to get cable or city water, trash, etc. Closest hospital is about 30 minutes away.
Any other information that you would like to add:
There are three banks; Falfurrias State bank is the only one with an ATM, and it is only at the bank itself. One Veterinarian, a couple furniture stores, a State Farm agent, a Nextel agent,
It is a fairly quiet town, the people are nice, though you should plan on providing your own entertainment. There is a gym at the station, but if you are not an agent, you cannot go there. There is a walking park that is frequently used behind one of the medical clinics. There are two medical clinics and a couple individual doctors. There are a few nice hotels on the highway, Days Inn, Best Western...
They are in the process of putting more businesses on the highway to draw more business into town. As far as auto repair, if you need something simple like an oil change or a tire repair, you can get that in Falfurrias. For more complicated things, there is an experienced family run shop that a lot of agents take their vehicles to in Alice. I would suggest getting a copy of the South Coastal Bend Directory (Telephone directory - 1-800-880-9199), it is very valuable when first in Falfurrias. Start looking ahead of time for rentals, they are few and far between. You have to be resourceful to find them, you may talk to someone who's cousin may be thinking about renting the house in town they moved out of two years ago to move to the country, you never know!
One plus, you can find small beach areas about 30 min away in Riviera or Loyola Beach.
