EXTRA INFORMATION:
Station type of work - We are a cut and chase station, meaning that we don't man a checkpoint or other static positions. Traffic that crosses the Border Road or "Drag Road" in our Area of Operations gets tracked down and apprehended to the best of our ability. The terrain we work in is very arduous with elevations extending from below sea level to over 4500 feet in elevation. We do A LOT of hiking while tracking groups. The Field Training Unit at El Cajon is 20 weeks long. You will be tested both mentally and physically. El Cajon is a small station. We don't have any X's, checkpoints, or static patrol positions. Our station is a sign cut station rooted primarily in sensor response and cutting the Border Road. There are several details, temporary assignments, available at ECJ. ATV's, Intel, FTO's, Sensors, but most are enforcement related. The people here are great, management is fair, and the work is good.
Any other information that you would like to add:
In San Diego County you have many different options as far as style of living and expense. Eastern part of San Diego County, a suburb called Lakeside, California. Out here your animals have plenty of space to run and children do too. The housing is very affordable in this part of the county, some of the names of the communities in Eastern San Diego County are Lakeside, El Cajon, Alpine, La Mesa, and all are within a 30-40 minute drive of the station.
You also have the option of living in south bay, Chula Vista, National City, and the drive is about 10-15 minutes to work. It is affordable to live in the South Bay part of the county although I would offer you this caution, the closer you live to the border (i.e.-the station) the higher the propensity that you will run into one of our clientele (that is to say, someone you have probably arrested before).
Remember when choosing an area to live in, three rules come into effect here in San Diego, 1. the closer to the beach you get, the more expensive the rent/mortgage, 2. The farther south you go, the cruddier the neighborhood is, 3. The farther east you go, the more peace and less crowding you will get. Most of the Brown Field Agents live in eastern Chula Vista, El Cajon/La Mesa, or Lakeside area. Here you will find the rents/mortgages reasonable with plenty of room for your dog. Incidentally, if you are married and have kids, or thinking about kids at all, Lakeside has the second highest rated school district in the state. The Chula Vista schools are outstanding as well.
In San Diego, if you are single, there are many things to do socially as well. We have the Gaslamp Quarter, sort of yuppie style bars and what not. If you are considering furthering your education, we have San Diego State, University of California San Diego, University of San Diego, and United States International University all in San Diego and all outstanding schools. Only in San Diego can you surf in the morning, scuba dive at noon, and go snow skiing in the afternoon
