Station type of work - A lot of Xs.
Sign cutting. Transportation check. A lot of details.
San Diego Sector (SDC) has more specialized units and
opportunity for details than any other sector in the BP,
hands down! We are definitely the most progressive sector!
Operation Gatekeeper brought the previously out-of-control
border to a manageable level. As a result, less manpower
was needed on the border and many "specialized units"
were developed to meet the changing challenges. For example,
BORSTAR and the Border Safety Initiative were initiated
in SDC in 1998 as a response to shifting illegal entry
patterns that traversed through hazardous areas in San
Diego's east county.
As the sophistication of smuggling operations
grows, SDC has stepped up to the challenge with specialized
positions for agents within various departments. Enforcement
Technology Department has incorporated GPS and GIS systems
in amazing ways. Sector and station INTEL departments
are making enormous progress in gathering and dismantling
smuggling operations.
Many agents are frustrated at "linewatch,"
which is the core of border security. Admittedly, most
of the time, linewatch isn't exciting or glamorous, but
it's part of the job. All new agents are expected to 'pay
their dues before moving on to the specialized units or
details, usually with 3 years of linewatch. However, I
know of several agents with just over a year in that have
been assigned to ATVs or other specialized units.
Due to their overwhelming numbers of illegal
entries, other sectors just don't have the specialization
that SDC does. Agents in other sectors may never get the
opportunity to try anything other than linewatch activities.

Any other information that you would
like to add: Brown Field Station is named after the
old WWII Army airfield near the border in San Diego, CA.
BRF station sits on the border across from urban Tijuana,
Mexico. Currently we are in charge of the US/Mexico border
from the Otay Mesa Port of Entry all the way out to Tecate,
CA. Once you get past the San Diego metropolitan flatlands,
the terrain becomes mountainous (3000 feet) and accessible
only by old jeep trails and one improved dirt road. There
are numerous steep canyons and hillsides with illegal
alien foot trails going back two generations. We do a
little hiking. ha ha:)
Cost of living? Median home price in San
Diego County just hit $360K. Rental homes start at 1500
per month, up over 2000 in nicer areas. If you don't mind
condo life, some are still under 200K. Apt's. are cheaper,
but the vacancy rate is almost zero, tough to find a place
where you want to be.
San Diego agents get a Locality Pay of 12.70%
of base pay. It was to go up to 22.8%, but the president
killed that increase to "pay for the war on terrorism".
San Diego is beautiful, no doubt about that,
but expensive. Lots to do/see on your off-duty time. Once
you bring a woman here, they'll never want to leave.
