Lay Awake
I lay awake at night and stare
Chewed my nails and pulled my hair
At dawn’s first light it’s still the same
Just hoping Mary will call my name.
I took the test and scored real high
Did not imagine that on my first try
I filled in forms ‘til my hand wore weary
Pen was out of ink and eyes grew teary
Got a nasty gift from the Land of Lakes
A credit check showed my mistakes
My app’s on hold until my bills are paid
With checks to Dentist and Doctor I obeyed
Medical test was just down the street
Pushups and sit ups to a rhythmic beat
Then hooked me up to an EKG
I was simply healthy as all could see.
Oral board in Champlain on 20th of June
Went before the men just before noon
Scared half to death when sent to the hall
They told me I passed, I was having a ball.
An INS agent came to my home
For my past sins did I atone
Mother, brother, sister and boss
And turned over stones that now had moss
New York and PA BI’s are done
Being held up by Jersey is not any fun
I am told that any day I should clear
Hope keeps trying to replace my fear
Someday I hope Mary will call
If not today, perhaps this fall
For now I stare at this message board
And see signs of hope that can’t be ignored
Soon to Charleston I hope to be
Attending the Patrol Academy
Then, as now, I’m sure I’ll say
Thanks to all of you and specially Ray.
(Ok, so it is not very good, but it made you laugh I
hope…)
