E's StoryJune 2007When I met my husband in my home town back in '94. He was a local deputy. We married in '95 and had our first baby in '96. Now a growing family we needed better financial support / insurance etc. One year later, he and a couple of his friends from the surrounding sheriff dept. discussed then decided to apply for the Border Patrol. Long process!! You don't realize till you do it yourself! Anyhow, they did well and moved on to the next step. My husband, not so well and was quickly discouraged. He struggled at the time with the artificial language. Finally we talked and prayed about it. (My husband is smarter than he gives himself credit for!) He researched and actually went to my old local school got tutored for basic English (learning to break down each word/phrase) and Waalaah!! He passed! Nine months later / baby #2 on it's way, he's off to the academy for 6 months! More praying, more stress, but always remembering what an awesome opportunity we have been given. Finally he gets through and we are officially stationed in Laredo Texas...Whoah!! It's own world and I'm Hispanic!!! This was a huge challenge for me, I was a 25 yr old mother of two... felt extremely lonely, but quickly found a near by church... North side Church of Christ, (truly a home away from home). The best church family you could ask for! They have stuck with us from beginning to end. I say that because now after 10 LONG years my husband has been given the opportunity to step up for a supervisor position closer to MY home! I can't believe how fast time goes by. I'm so proud of him and maybe don't say it often enough... Every day I see him gather up his gear, suit up, kiss the girls, kiss me and head for work not knowing what or whom he will face that day. Today as I tell my story he closes this chapter in Laredo for a new one. Goodbye to old classmates, new friends, and familiar faces. Reflecting on the past 10 years, a lot has happened. We live as a closer, more appreciative family... We've learned to be patient and not to rush things. Everything and everyone has it's place at the right time [TOP] |
